Quick And Easy Remedies To Eliminate Hiccups

Everyone experiences hiccups at one time or another, mostly hiccups go away on their own within few minutes but sometimes it last longer than we have to try any remedy to get rid of them. They are uncomfortable and unable us to talk and make us embarrassed. They are annoying and sometimes funny.

What are Hiccups?

Hiccups are uncontrollable contractions of the diaphragm muscle. Diaphragm is the muscle which is below your lungs.The purpose of Diaphragm is to regulate breathing.When diaphragm contracts,lungs take in oxygen and when diaphragm relaxes it releases carbon dioxide.When the contraction of Diaphragm is out of rhythm it causes hiccups .Due to these contractions the vocal cords close suddenly,which results in a sudden rush of air into lungs which creates the sound and  characteristics of hiccups.

Common Causes of Hiccups

  • Overeating
  • Intake of beverages,carbonated drinks
  • Eating spicy foods
  • Eating very hot or very cold food
  • Consuming alcohol
  • Being emotionally stressed or excited
  • Swallowing too much air
  • Change in temperature


These are the following remedies  which will work effectively if you ever have hiccups. However, some of the remedies actually stimulate your phrenic nerves or vagus nerves, which are connected to your diaphragm.

Take a deep breath and hold it for few seconds. It will build up carbon dioxide in your lungs which relaxes diaphragm,indeed help to get rid of hiccups.

Take few sips of warm water from a glass of water.Take anything sweet or sour which can be  a teaspoon of sugar,honey,chocolate or sucking of a wedge lemon or putting a drop of vinegar on your tongue.

Gargle Ice water for few seconds.Use your thumb to apply pressure to the palm of your  other hand.Rub the back of your neck.

Put your fingers in your ears while drinking water. Hug your knees :Bring your knees to your chest.


Some factors are responsible for hiccups. Changing some habits  helps a lot to prevent hiccups. If you notice some actions  are causing your hiccups. So these are the following preventions you should try:

Avoid carbonated drinks

  • Eat slowly
  • Don’t eat spicy food
  • Avoid Alcohol
  • Take Deep breathing or meditation and prefer to remain calm which will reduce stress.

When to consult with Doctor?

Hiccups that last longer more than 48 hours  than consult with your doctor. In few cases,long term hiccups lead to diabetes which can cause stomach paralysis or can cause other symptoms including abnormal abdominal bloating which may lead to never-ending hiccups.
