Hagia Sophia is one of the most important landmarks in Istanbul turkey. On the order of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, it will be converted into a mosque.
He made this announcement on Friday. Hagia Sophia, a major tourist spot, has a long and complicated history. The architectural marvel was built as a church by the Byzantines in the 6th century. It was then converted to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453 and remained a Muslim house of worship until the early 20th century. It was originally built as the cathedral for the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire.
In 1934 Turkish leader Mustafa Kamal Ataturk’s cabinet decided to turn it into a museum. They said it should be a symbol of a peaceful religion. Friday’s court ruling grants Turkey’s president the authority to restore the museum to its status as a mosque.
Erdogan intended to make it into mosque he said the site will be open for worship
The president also said that Non-Muslims are also welcome in the mosque. It will “continue to embrace everyone,”
When Hagia Sophia called upon Muslims for prayer on Friday afternoon, a crowd in the nearby plaza broke out in cheers chanting “Allahu akbar,”.
Although Erdogan’s decision is being condemned internationally.
It is a 1500 years old world heritage monument and is a religious center for both Muslims and Christians. The domed site retains its Christian iconography, and minarets were added during its time as a mosque.
